Kyiv (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he plans to meet his US counterpart Donald Trump on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly next week, according to statements released on Saturday.
Zelensky said he would be holding a meeting with Trump, where they would discuss security guarantees for Ukraine and sanctions against Russia.
The meeting is expected to occur concurrent with world leaders at the UN for its high-level session beginning on September 22, 2025. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio remarked that Trump has spoken to both Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin several times and views this meeting as an opportunity to work towards some sort of peace agreement between Kyiv and Moscow.
Are Ukraine’s partners preparing joint guarantees for Kyiv’s defence?
Zelensky previously said that Ukraine and its partners are “already working on the concrete content of the security guarantees”. Security guarantees for Ukraine should cover provisions on army funding, agreements with NATO members, and sanctions against Russia, he stated.
Officials from Ukraine, the US and Europe have been holding talks on security guarantees for Kyiv after the war in an effort to prepare for a potential peace deal with Russia. As reported, some plans on the table have included a joint peacekeeping force on the ground, backed by US air support.
What were the outcomes of Zelensky’s past meetings with Trump?
After Trump’s swearing in for a second term as President in January 2025, he and Zelensky often met. The first major meeting happened in the White House on February 28, 2025. The meeting was filled with tensions and was confrontational to the extent of discussing what the ceasefire terms could be, among other issues, such as Ukrainian mineral resources, but a real resolution was made.
The latest meeting took place on August 18, 2025, at the White House, where they had a roughly hour-long one-on-one conversation before discussions with European leaders. The aim of the meeting was to determine ways to end the war and strengthen security guarantees.
