Eeklo (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The Ceremonial Square in front of Eeklo Town Hall has completed its 1st phase. Archaeological finds caused delays. The 2nd phase begins early 2025 under Alderman Christophe De Wale, with full completion next summer.
As VRT News reported, the Ceremonial Square in front of Eeklo Town Hall, in the Province of East Flanders, Belgium, has officially been completed. The renovations were initially set to be completed in June 2025, but the schedule had to change. The square remained under reconstruction until the summer holiday.
What delays and plans are shaping the completion of Eeklo Ceremonial Square?
The completion of the Ceremonial Square in front of Eeklo Town Hall marks the end of the 1stphase of the city’s major renovation project. The works, divided into 2 stages to ensure smoother planning, also provided room to handle unexpected challenges, such as the archaeological finds uncovered during the initial phase.
The 2nd phase will focus on the terrace side of the square, where archaeological research is set to begin. Alderman Christophe De Wale (Team 9900 Stadslijst) says the investigation should be completed by February 2026, after which construction will resume to finish the entire square. The full project is expected to be completed by next summer.
The Ceremonial Square in front of Eeklo’s Town Hall has always been a centre of public activities. A renovation and redesign were proposed to modernise the Square in 2022, while honouring the historical value. Work began at the beginning of 2023, but was delayed when archaeological artefacts were discovered and needed to be considered as part of the study.
