Kyiv (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a meeting with US special envoy Keith Kellogg in Kyiv on Monday. They discussed defence cooperation and sanctions against Russia during a “productive” conversation, according to the Ukrainian leader.
Amid escalating tensions between the US and Russia, Keith Kellogg, the US president’s envoy for Ukraine, arrived in Kyiv to discuss security measures and sanctions targeting Moscow.
Kellogg’s visit is anticipated to take approximately a week. It occurred after Donald Trump announced that the US would supply Patriot air defence missiles to Ukraine. His announcement followed a statement he planned to make on Russia on Monday.
What did Zelensky and Kellogg discuss in the Kyiv meeting?
“We discussed the path to peace and what we can practically do together to bring it closer. This includes strengthening Ukraine’s air defence, joint production, and procurement of defence weapons in collaboration with Europe,”
Zelensky noted on X.
Moreover, US President Donald Trump is anticipated to deliver a “major” statement today after mentioning that the US will send Ukraine “various pieces” of “very sophisticated” military equipment. He also met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House. Ukrainians are cautiously welcoming reports of US arms shipments but remain wary.
What new military aid has Trump promised Ukraine?
As reported by Reuters, President Donald Trump declared that the US would provide Patriot air defence missile systems to Ukraine to mitigate ongoing Russian missile and drone attacks. According to Trump, such supplies will form part of a larger deal, whereby NATO members will procure US-based weapons and then transfer them to the Ukrainians, with NATO reimbursing the US for the costs.
Trump also emphasised the urgent need for these advanced systems in Ukraine as Russian attacks go on and expressed frustration about Russian President Putin always refusing to agree to a ceasefire.
Previously, President Volodymyr Zelensky met with US special envoy Keith Kellogg on February 20, 2025, in Kyiv. Among the topics discussed were the situation in the field of operations, methods for retrieving Ukrainian prisoners of war, and ways to provide effective security guarantees for Ukraine.
