Tehran (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Iran’s Defence Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh said on Wednesday that if nuclear talks break down and conflict with the US emerges, Iran will target American bases in the region. This comes just days before the planned sixth round of Iran-U.S. nuclear talks.
US President Donald Trump has consistently warned Tehran that it will face bombing if it doesn’t reach a new nuclear agreement. The next round of talks is scheduled for this week, with Trump stating that negotiations will happen on Thursday, while Iran claims they’ll take place on Sunday in Oman.
What will Iran do if nuclear talks collapse?
“Some officials on the other side threaten conflict if negotiations don’t come to fruition. If a conflict is imposed on us… all U.S. bases are within our reach, and we will boldly target them in host countries,”
Nasirzadeh stated during a press meeting.
According to Nasirzadeh, Tehran has recently tested a missile with a two-tonne warhead and is not willing to accept any limitations. In February, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated that Iran should continue to develop its military capabilities, including its missiles.
Why is Iran rejecting the latest US proposal?
Just a few days ago, Iran announced it would soon present a counter-proposal for a nuclear deal to the US in response to a US offer that Iran considers unacceptable. At the same time, US President Donald Trump said discussions would continue.
Earlier, Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stated that Iran was putting together a counter-offer to the US proposal presented in late May. He mentioned there were no details about the timing of a sixth round of talks.
Iran was reportedly crafting a negative response to the U.S. plan, according to an earlier Reuters story. The U.S. offer, according to an Iranian ambassador, did not address disagreements over uranium enrichment on Iranian land, the export of Iran’s whole supply of highly enriched uranium, or trustworthy measures to remove U.S. sanctions.
