Ganshoren (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – A 12-year-old boy has died following a collision between his scooter and a police vehicle near Elisabethpark in Ganshoren, prompting an official investigation.

According to Ganshoren Mayor Jean-Paul Van Laethem (Les Engagés), a police car was a part of the collision.

The victim was brought to the hospital after emergency personnel arrived on the scene promptly. The mayor of Ganshoren, Belgium, said that the 12-year-old child passed away in the hospital.

“My thoughts go out to the victim’s family,”

said Van Laethem.

The scooter driver was hit by a police vehicle. He fell in the Landsroemlaan.

Fire department spokesman Walter Derieuw tells Belga that the accident occurred around 18:50.

“The emergency services were quickly on the scene with an ambulance and a MUG team. The victim was resuscitated on the spot and taken to hospital.”

Are there any safety measures being implemented after this accident involving a police vehicle in Ganshoren?

Police officers undergo specific training on how to safely handle traffic situations, which includes using temporary traffic control devices (barriers, cones), positioning cars correctly, and keeping situational awareness to prevent approaching traffic risks.

When operating at or near roads, officers must wear luminous vests and make use of the proper lighting and signage to improve visibility, particularly when conducting traffic stops or handling incidents.

One officer is assigned to continuously monitor the scene of an event, making sure that traffic control measures are maintained and requesting more resources if necessary. Drivers approaching the situation are better informed by rapid and accurate updates provided by dynamic message signs.
