Jabbeke (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Starting today, June 2, 2025, Jabbeke upgrades its E40 roundabout, fixing a high-risk black spot (score 18) with safer cycle paths on Weststraat and Stationsstraat; work lasts three weeks.

As VRT News reported, starting today, June 2, 2025, significant construction is happening in Jabbeke, a municipality in the province of West Flanders, Belgium, to make the roundabout near the E40 entrance and exit safer for cyclists. The current setup on Weststraat and Stationsstraat is dangerous and unclear.

Cyclists have the right of way on Weststraat, but not on Stationsstraat. Officials mentioned that this confusion has made it a “black spot” with a high-risk score of 18. The mix of local traffic, big vehicles, and unclear rules has made this junction risky for both cyclists and drivers.

How will Jabbeke’s E40 roundabout upgrade improve cyclist safety?

The ongoing construction in Jabbeke includes changes to the cycle paths on Weststraat and Stationsstraat. To help with traffic, especially for large trucks, a new entrance and exit ramp is planned near the supermarket, aiming to keep big vehicles away from the town centre and reduce traffic at the roundabout.

An outside group is doing a quick safety check to find immediate ways to improve things before the main changes are finished. They mentioned that these improvements are part of a bigger plan by the region to invest in better cycling infrastructure across Flanders, including more cycle highways and better local routes. By fixing dangerous spots like the Jabbeke roundabout, the government hopes to reduce accidents and encourage more people to cycle safely every day.

On Stationsstraat, a completely separate cycle path is being built for cyclists going towards the roundabout. According to officials, the new design gives cars priority over cyclists everywhere, simplifying the rules. New road markings will clearly show who has the right of way.

The work will take 3 weeks, and Weststraat will be closed during this time. This project aims to make the area safer and easier to navigate for both cyclists and drivers. They mentioned that it’s part of a bigger plan to improve cycling and traffic safety in the region.
