Harentals (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – A deadly crash on the E313 near Herentals-Oost killed a German couple and their baby; police, firefighters, and medics responded; traffic was heavily disrupted during rush hour.

As VRT News reported, yesterday afternoon, May 28, 2025, an accident happened on the E313 motorway near Herentals-Oost, province of Antwerp, Belgium, going towards Antwerp. Around 4:10 PM, a car crashed into a big truck. The car was stuck under the truck’s trailer, and rescuers had to use special equipment to get it out.

Police, firefighters, and medics rushed to help, but all 3 people in the car died. They were a couple from Germany and their baby. The police said it was a very serious accident because the crash was so bad.

What caused the deadly Herentals E313 crash and traffic chaos?

Because the car was stuck, a crane had to lift the truck so rescuers could reach it. The E313 motorway going to Antwerp was closed for hours, and traffic had to go a different way. This caused long lines of cars, especially since the accident happened when everyone was going home from work.

The roads around the motorway also got very busy as people tried to find other routes. Drivers waited for an extended period of time, and traffic control advised people to avoid the area if at all possible.

According to officials, due to the position of the car, it was stuck badly enough that they had to use a crane to raise the truck to get to the car. They mentioned that to make things even worse, another accident happened later that night in Ekeren, which made the traffic even worse around Antwerp.

These 2 accidents caused a tough commute for everyone. For now, police are investigating the incident at Herentals-Oost to retrace the circumstances surrounding the crash. They are examining potential video footage and interviewing anyone who may have been a witness to the crash.
