Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – A Brussels police officer involved in a fatal May 2025 crash drove without a valid license after losing it in 2023 for speeding. Investigations raise trust and accountability concerns.

As VRT News reporter, a police officer was caught driving without a valid license after a crash. After being arrested, the officer was sent to the public prosecutor. He will now go to the police court quickly. Officials mentioned that this process is for simple cases where the facts are clear. The officer could be fined, have his driving ban extended, or face consequences at work.

How did a Brussels police officer drive unlicensed in the fatal 2025 crash?

On May 11, 2025, a police car and a scooter were involved in a fatal traffic accident on Blaesstraat in Brussels. According to initial reports, the scooter operator did not yield and impacted the police car.

The report noted that both vehicles were operating within the speed limit, and who was considered to be the aggressor in this relationship has not been reported, but neither vehicle was involved in an active chase of any kind.

Officials mentioned that the police officer driving the patrol vehicle did not possess a valid driver’s license at the time of the accident. This has led to increased scrutiny and legal action. The Brussels public prosecutor has opened 2 investigations: one into the crash itself and another into the officer’s violation of traffic laws for driving without a license.

The recent crash is one of the other cases where young people have died after crashes with police cars. In 2020, Adil died, and in 2019, Mehdi Bouda died. No police officers were charged in those cases. But the new case is different because the officer didn’t have a license.

People want to know if the police are checking themselves and being responsible. Everyone is waiting to see what happens in the investigations, and groups are asking for the police to be more open and take responsibility.

The officer had been convicted of speeding in 2023 by a court in Liège. Because of this, his driver’s license was taken away. He was required to pass driving tests again to get his license back, but he didn’t do this. Despite not being allowed to drive, he continued to do so. This issue was not noticed until the recent investigation.
