Temse (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – A 25-year-old man from Temse was arrested after driving an e-scooter at 90 km/h the wrong way on the N16, hitting police twice while fleeing a routine check under the influence of cannabis.

As VRT News reported, a 25-year-old man from Temse, in the province of East Flanders, Belgium, arrested under the influence of cannabis and with a lifelong driving ban, rode an e-step at 90 kilometres per hour, driving in the wrong direction on the N16 on May 22, 2025.  A routine police check was conducted when the man did not stop for a motorcycle officer.

When the officer tried to check him, the man ran away. He first drove in the wrong direction on a cycle path. The man did not care about the risk. The police officer followed him and did not give up. The man then left the cycle path and drove onto the N16 road. He drove in the wrong direction between the 2 lanes of traffic.

Several drivers had to swerve or stop quickly to avoid hitting him. The man drove in a wild and unsafe way. After a short time, he crossed over the centre of the road and began driving in the right direction again. He kept trying to get away.

What led to the e-scooter chase in Temse?

Police spokesman Dirk Van De Sande said the man caused a very chaotic and dangerous situation. Driving the wrong way on a busy road, especially in the middle area between the 2 sides, could have led to many head-on crashes. People who saw it and drivers on the road were shocked by how reckless the man was.

After a while, the man crossed over the centre of the road and started driving in the right direction again. He kept running from the police. Van De Sande called the chase “hallucinatory”. The man on the scooter hit police officers on motorcycles twice. These crashes caused little damage to the police vehicles, but the officers kept chasing him.

He finally crashed when he tried to get back onto the cycle path and lost control of his scooter. Police were able to arrest him right after the crash. The man is now facing serious charges because he ran from the police and put other people in danger.
