Deurne (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – A car fire in a garage filled the apartments above with smoke in Deurne. A mother, her 1-year-old baby, and another person were checked; the mother and child were hospitalised. Firefighters contained the fire, but the garage was destroyed.
As VRT News reported, a car caught fire inside a garage workshop on the ground floor of a building with apartments above in Deurne. The fire created a lot of thick smoke that quickly filled the garage and went into the apartments. Emergency services were called.
Firefighters arrived quickly to put out the fire and stop it from spreading. Paramedics checked on the people who were affected by the smoke. The fire was contained to the car in the workshop, but the smoke worried the residents in the apartments above.
What happened in the Deurne garage fire that sent a baby to the hospital?
A mother, her 1-year-old child, and another person were exposed to the smoke. Paramedics checked all 3 for smoke inhalation, which can cause breathing problems. The mother and baby were taken to the hospital to be watched and treated because of the child’s young age and the risks of smoking.
The third person was treated at the scene and didn’t need to go to the hospital. Kim Bastiaens from the local police said that the quick work of the emergency services kept everyone safe and limited the damage.
The fire generated a considerable amount of smoke, and as such, authorities used the Be-Alert system to alert individuals in the area. The occupants were advised to close windows and doors to keep smoke outside their residences.
They added that it was required because the smoke was dense and had escaped into other areas outside the building, which posed a danger. Emergency services acted swiftly in extinguishing the fire, and they also kept the public updated throughout the incident.
By 11:15, firefighters had mostly controlled the fire, and the smoke had lessened, but the situation was still serious. Firefighters stayed to put out any remaining small fires and stop the fire from starting again. The garage workshop where the fire started was destroyed.
The lower floor of the building was severely damaged and is no longer safe, so individuals who were residents or working at the building had to relocate. The fire permanently damaged the building, and it will have to be repaired before it is usable again.
