Overijse (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The municipality of Overijse, led by Filip Boon, is working on improving road safety around schools by adding crosswalks, addressing speeding, and involving parents in the planning process.
As VRT News reported, the municipality of Overijse, in the province of Flemish Brabant, Belgium, is starting a project to make the roads around all the schools safer. They are asking parents for their ideas to help them. Filip Boon, who is in charge of transportation, said they will look at all schools, not just the elementary school.
He mentioned that they want to find places that are dangerous and fix them. They’re working with parents to make sure they know what the community is worried about. This way, they can make the roads safer for all the students.
Are Overijse school zones safe enough for children?
The parents at the elementary school are worried because there aren’t safe places for kids to cross the street, especially near the station. Filip Boon knows this is a problem and agrees that people need safe places to cross.
He mentioned that the plan is to add crosswalks where they are needed. This is part of a bigger plan to make the roads safer around all the schools in Overijse. The goal is to make it safer for children to get to and from school.
“The area around the primary school is already a 30 km/h zone, but many drivers do not realise that pedestrians are allowed to cross anywhere.”
Councillor for Mobility Filip Boon (Dynamics for Overijse)
Filip Boon explained that parents are worried about how fast cars are going near the schools in Overijse. The parents say that many drivers don’t follow the speed limits, which makes it dangerous for students and people who are walking.
In addition to speeding, the parents also mentioned that it’s not always clear how to get to the school safely by bike. Because of these worries, the town is going to do something to improve safety for the students, their families, and everyone else who travels near the schools.
The alderman also understands the parents’ demand for more zebra crossings. “We will now look at the possibilities with our mobility service,”
Boon explains.
“And we will also review traffic safety in general, because work is being done on the new Markthal site.”
The town made the area a 30-zone, where cars can only go 30 km/h. This was done to make it safer for people to cross the street anywhere in that area. But, many drivers either don’t know about the 30-zone or don’t follow the speed limit.
Even though some drivers don’t follow the rules, the town plans to add more safety measures around the school before the new school year begins. These changes are meant to make the area safer for everyone in the community.
