Eeklo (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Construction work on Ceremonieplein in Eeklo will start on April 28, with a plan to minimize disruption for terraces and local businesses. The city works with construction companies to manage noise and inconvenience.

There will be some building work being undertaken in the middle of Eeklo, East Flanders province, Belgium, this summer. Authorities said that individuals sitting on the terraces in front of the town hall, known as Ceremonieplein, will be impacted.

The city wanted to finish the work before the summer so people could enjoy the outdoors in peace, but they had to change their plans. They will now be working on the square until mid-July 2025. The city wants to make the area better, but they also want to make sure it’s not too inconvenient for people and businesses.

How will Eeklo manage summer construction on Ceremonieplein?

The city of Eeklo is trying to make the construction work on Ceremonieplein less bothersome for people who like to sit on the terraces during the summer.  They are working with the construction company to make sure the work doesn’t get in the way of people enjoying the cafes and restaurants.

They will put up signs and fences to separate the construction area from the terraces so people can’t see the work being done.  Residents mentioned that even if they try to hide the construction, it will still be noisy.

“We are trying to limit the inconvenience for the catering establishments,”

says Loete.

The city of Eeklo wanted to make sure the construction on Ceremonieplein didn’t bother the businesses and people in the area, especially during the busy summer months.  So, they decided to delay the start of the work on the part of the square where the terraces are located until after the summer.

The archaeologists have done excavating half of the market square outside of the town hall. The city will start construction on April 28th, 2025. The city has worked with the construction company to make sure that things will go smoothly and that they have a schedule on how long it will take.
