Sint-Eloois-Winkel (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – A serious traffic accident injured a pedestrian at Sint-Eloois-Winkel during the evening. A male aged 57 years old received severe injuries after a vehicle struck him while waiting at a zebra crosswalk in the evening.

The incident in Sint-Eloois-Winkel involved a vehicle hitting a 57-year-old adult pedestrian who suffered serious wounds at the location of a zebra crossing.

A traffic expert designated by the public prosecutor joined the police investigation following the car accident that happened on Kasteelstraat near the town centre.

The occurrence took place at 6:45 pm in Kasteelstraat.

A vehicle hit the pedestrian while he was crossing the zebra intersection. The collision immediately hurled the victim through the air before he landed violently on the pavement, requiring an emergency hospital transfer in a critical state.

According to a local resident, it is a dangerous intersection.

“There are lights here, but no flashers. Some people really speed past here and give it some extra gas when the light turns orange. As a pedestrian, you have to look carefully before you cross.”

What is the safety of Zebra Crossings?

Zebra crossings function as intended for pedestrian safety, yet incidents that lead to accidents are still observed at these locations. Serious pedestrian accidents mainly happen in areas without official crossing points (54% of cases) and also occur at zebra crossings (12%). The primary contributors to pedestrian accidents emerge from drivers neglecting to observe pedestrians properly. Research has not found a significant difference in collision records between “full” zebra crossings (with complete markings) and nearby unmarked side roads.
