Paris (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – U.S. Vice President JD Vance will examine economic concerns and security collaboration with European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen, he stated ahead of a bilateral discussion with her at an AI summit in Paris.
The Trump administration has been very clear that we care a lot about Europe. We see a lot of economic relationships to build upon with Europe,
he stated.
We also want to make sure that we’re actually engaged in a security partnership that’s good for both Europe and the United States.
On February 11, 2025, United States Vice President J.D. Vance met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Paris during the same period of an artificial intelligence summit.
How does Vance view Europe’s approach to AI regulation?
During the summit, Vance gave a speech calling for lesser regulation of artificial intelligence to promote innovation and maintain the United States‘ preeminence in the area of artificial intelligence.
Before the meeting, Vance at the AI Summit emphasised that “excessive regulation” of AI could stifle its development, urging European countries to adopt a more open approach. He criticised Europe‘s regulatory framework, including the Digital Services Act and GDPR, as overly restrictive for smaller firms.
Vance outlined an America First strategy for AI dominance, focusing on developing powerful systems using American-designed chips. He warned against partnering with authoritarian regimes like China due to the potential risks of information infrastructure compromise.
