Wervik (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – On Monday evening, Wervik experienced a traffic accident resulting in serious injuries to a young man. A vehicle drove off the road along Hoogweg at around 20:30 before turning onto its roof in a water-filled ditch.
A 16-year-old car passenger suffered serious injuries following a Wervik traffic accident that occurred on Monday evening. At 8:30 pm, the vehicle left Hoogweg Road before resting upside down in a ditch. Both the 22-year-old driver and 16-year-old passenger survived the accident, though the younger individual experienced critical injuries, which ended in stabilisation.
“Because the vehicle was upside down in the ditch, it was not easy to get the victims out of the vehicle,”
Said Captain Johan Bonnier, station commander of the Wervik fire station.
There was hardly any water in the ditch to the left of the crashed car, but to the right, there was.
“The car landed just on a higher ditch where there was no water, despite the rain. So, there was never a risk of drowning. A blessing in disguise.”
What factors contribute to road accidents in West Flanders?
Road safety throughout West Flanders represents an ongoing matter since Wervik resides in this region. A fatal car accident occurred on the E40 near Veurne in West Flanders, according to police, who first suggested poor weather conditions were to blame.
West Flanders had another case where a wrong-way driver struck six people, causing major injuries to them. The incidents illustrate how dangerous the roads become in that region while demonstrating why proper road safety protocols are essential. A Belgian national aged 20 triggered a fatal A67 vehicle crash near Eersel. Dutch law enforcement detained him in December 2024; however, severe injuries led to one passenger’s death, followed by the hospitalisation of three remaining occupants.
