(Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Popular and leading e-commerce company Amazon has been in the spotlight mainly concerning its functioning and its policies in the context of international relations. One of the questions that has elicited much discussion more recently is whether Amazon funds the Israeli regime, especially during the ongoing conflict between Israelis and Palestinians.

In this article, Amazon’s history, its business operations in Israel, its political stance, and the general social media sentiments associated with it will be discussed. These considerations and the debates regarding Amazon’s position make it possible to contribute to these discussions due to an understanding of the company’s corporate strategy and its place in the international markets, which would explain why the question of its stance is pertinent and why it is challenging to answer.

The Role of Amazon in Global Business

It is pertinent to know about the Amazon company before going to its affiliation with Israel. Amazon was created in 1994 by Jeff Bezos, originally an online retailer focused purely on books, but it has grown into the world’s largest store offering virtually any product, from books to electronics, home appliances, and so on. Amazon has changed people’s experience with the products they want to buy by providing comfort, quickness, and an endless list of opportunities.

Currently, Amazon logistics function in many countries, and the name is almost synonymous with online shopping. Its sphere of operations ranges from cloud computing, entertainment, and logistics, and thus, it can be considered one of the most influential companies in the world. Through Amazon, the retail business giant has influenced all areas of the current world trade: the ways of making purchases, stock management, and delivery.

Due to reaching multiple industries, Amazon’s actions impact a large number of them.  Perhaps the largest area to examine is Amazon’s continuous innovation in technology, especially cloud services in AWS. AWS is one of the largest cloud solutions providers in the world, offering flexible cloud computing solutions for companies and governments. It provides organisations globally the ability to deliver applications, host data, and expand their business.

For instance, AWS’s customers embrace governments and organisations from different parts of the world, even including Middle Eastern ones. AWS’s experience underscores Amazon’s increasing role in moulding the world’s digital markets and the ways that companies of all types and governments approach computing and information.

Being a giant backed by colossal resources and an Internet presence, one cannot underestimate the impact most of Amazon’s business decisions have on the market. Arguably, one of the significant distinctive observations of the company is that it invests significantly in technological infrastructure and cloud computing via a subsidiary called Amazon Web Services (AWS).

AWS is a global company that offers cloud services to businesses and governments, including some governments in the Middle East. Thus, CORS has positioned itself firmly in the world economy. It is claimed that for Amazon, the active presence in this area is not only business-related but may reveal a certain political alignment with countries like Israel, which possesses all the attributes of the technological leader in the region.

Amazon’s Operations in Israel

Amazon’s direct operations have been in Israeli territory since 2014 when it acquired a local Israeli company called Annapurna Labs. Amazon’s acquisition aimed at improving the firm’s hardware division has arguably been amongst the main causes of the raging debate about the firm’s association with Israel. Annapurna Labs, which focused on semiconductor technologies, expanded Amazon’s hardware capability, especially on those connected to the company’s AWS and server biz.

Since cloud computing emerged as a key technology for global corporate clients, many saw Amazon’s investment in Annapurna Labs as a definite attempt to expand the company’s internal capabilities in a rapidly expanding field. The company, therefore, ventured into Israel more so due to business needs than the need to take advantage of the IT professionals that are easily found in the country’s technology hub.

Amazon also has an R&D centre in Israel. It organises its activities around a range of technologies that shape it and operate within it, including artificial intelligence and machine learning. Amazon’s operation in Israel, both in political and economic bodies, due to its involvement in the country’s technological market, mostly in Tel-Aviv, has caused some people to develop political and economic concerns about Amazon. Most critics claim that Amazon contributes to the growth of the Israeli economy, which in turn supports the policies of the government.

This perception is backed by the way Israel’s high-tech industry is closely associated with its defence industry. Whereas most of the developed technologies have industrial as well as military potential, it is difficult to distinguish the economic pursuits from the security concerns in the region. To some, the investments Amazon makes in Israel seem to align with the general strategic agenda of the Israeli authorities.

Still, Amazon has been mostly apolitical and presented its activity in Israel as a business opportunity to leverage hi-tech professionals and improve client’s portfolios. The company has not issued any political support for the current Israeli policies or embraced political affiliation with the country. However, political opponents can still hit back by stating that it is highly unlikely that Amazon has any bias on its stake, and yet, activists are able to point out this is a politically sensitive region; thus, economics does not get a free pass. The two nations’ economic relations, of course, remain a primary area of concern regarding the political support Amazon indirectly provides to Israel.

Amazon and Political Stance: A Complex Relationship

In contrast with some other multinational corporations, Amazon seldom interferes with the political process. Unlike many other businesses, it’s a tradition that the company does not position itself politically in public and stresses its corporate objectives and strategies. This has been the case in relation to self-interests, especially when bearing on its operations in Israel. For instance, in 2014, when Amazon bought Annapurna Labs, the company was quick to state that its objective was to develop technological prowess and not to favour Israel politically.

In other words, Amazon has not taken sides in the conflict as much as it has cited business reasons for its actions. This non-political approach fits the company’s global longitude as it usually does not take sides politically but focuses on business development.

Still, the research reveals diverse signs of how the company positively impacts the Israeli economy, especially in terms of technology. In investing in the growth of Israel’s tech sector and utilising Indigenous engineers for its development, Amazon contributes to the sustainment of this god-like status. Why is Israel the start-up nation?

For years, Israel has made a large mark in the technological world, especially in IT and software, AI, and cybersecurity. There is an increasing focus in this area, and Amazon, with its acquisition of Annapurna Labs and development centres in Israel, forms a part of this growth. The defence-tech connections are extensive and familiar among Israel-based companies that Amazon has recently invested in, and critics suggest that its investment indeed benefits the Israeli military. Those critics believe such collaborations work invisibly to polarise civilian engagement from military use and business from governance in the region.

Critics of the Palestinian position might perceive Amazon as part of the conflict, given the Israeli regime’s policies in Palestine. Amazon, in particular, has not openly supported any political activity; nevertheless, its influence in the Israeli economy does not leave a doubt about its side with the Israeli authorities. These perceptions have placed Amazon on the receiving end of demands for boycotts, more so from activist groups affiliated with the BDS group. The purpose of the BDS movement is to create economic pressure on Israel, and firms that conduct business with Israel are targeted, of which Amazon happens to fall under this category.

Philanthropic Activities and Humanitarian Aid

Though Amazon has had various business impacts on Israel’s economy, it has also participated in various charitable activities across the globe, in general, and in some Middle Eastern countries, in particular. Amazon has its own philanthropic extension known as Amazon Smile, which lets consumers donate a certain percentage of their orders to charities of their choice. Nonetheless, Amazon has not declared itself in the donation of funds towards organisations with the main agenda of promoting the welfare of either Israelis or Palestinians. Such lack of disclosure about its philanthropic activities continues to fuel the public question about the neutrality of the company or if it is secretly endorsing the political policies of Israel.

It should be noted that while Amazon’s charities are still large and varied, the things it has chosen to support do not include things like the Israeli-Palestinian situation. Since the immense audience already perceives Amazon as staying away from the issue and avoiding further harming the customers, it avoids further angering its consumerism.

However, such a neutral stand regarding charitable donations compromises the company when being accused of selective activism concerning international causes but not embracing any regional political issues, such as the Middle East issue. To a large extent, critics believe that keeping their lips sealed on these issues may be sending negative signals to the general populace, implying that Amazon supports the current regime in the region, which most people associate with Israel. Whether or not Amazon has decided to wade into this issue is also a point of debate.

Social Media and Public Opinion on Amazon’s Support for Israel

Social media has become a major battleground for opinions about Amazon’s business dealings with Israel. Activists, especially those who support the Palestinian cause, have frequently called for boycotts of Amazon due to its operations in Israel. The hashtag #BoycottAmazon has been used by some social media users to express their opposition to Amazon’s business dealings in the region.

These online campaigns are often tied to the broader Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement, which calls for economic pressure on Israel to end what it considers to be violations of Palestinian rights. Critics argue that Amazon’s economic support for Israel, through its R&D centres and technology investments, enables the Israeli government to continue its military and political policies.

On the other hand, there are those who support Amazon’s presence in Israel, arguing that the company is simply engaging in business practices that support technological innovation and global commerce. Many supporters of Israel see Amazon’s investments as a positive contribution to the region’s economy, which can help promote stability and prosperity. These users often take to social media to defend the company’s involvement in the country, using hashtags such as #StandWithIsrael and #SupportIsrael. These online campaigns emphasise the positive role that Amazon plays in fostering job creation and technological development in Israel, contributing to its status as a global leader in the tech industry.

In 2021, for example, a user on Twitter posted:

“Amazon has been a great partner to Israel’s tech ecosystem. Supporting innovation is good for business. Let’s not turn corporate moves into political statements.”

Similarly, another user argued:

Boycotting Amazon will only hurt consumers. They provide jobs, products, and services worldwide. Let’s focus on the real issues, not just one company’s investments.”

These social media posts illustrate the divide between the two sides of the debate—those who view Amazon’s investments as a form of corporate complicity with Israel’s policies and those who see Amazon’s business decisions.

Conclusion

Amazon, being a firm, does not afford direct political positions and makes Israel more than just its political stance. By investing in and acquiring various firms in the Israeli technology sector, the company has, without a doubt, contributed firmly to improving the economic status of Israel largely through the technology and defence industries. The concept of criticism arises from its operations in Israel: Buy’s acquisitions of Annapurna Labs. Similar to Microsoft’s operations in Israel, however, they are not simply motivated by political support for Israel’s government. Amazon, for example, will not deal with politics, and the image of the company is kept neutral while the company plans to expand its business internationally.

Nonetheless, it is hard to overstate the scale of Amazon and the rather important economic and technological impacts that it provides to the Israeli economy. Even though Amazon has not taken an active part in advocating Israel’s political line, being involved in the development of the tech industry in Israel, which is associated with the military, analysts debate whether Amazon is boosting the Israeli government’s activities. Some critics of Amazon continued to stay out of the conflict between Palestinians and Israel and did not disclose much information about its charitable activities, which only made some people believe it was involved in the ongoing political scenario.

On the one hand, you have activists who are urging people who support the Palestinian cause to boycott this company, while on the other, you have people who assert that Amazon has every right to be in Israel as any other technologically oriented company. These differing perceptions go on to play out on social media, where hashtags such as #BoycottAmazon #SupportIsrael are other related hashtags that have been debated on Amazon.

In conclusion, it can be stated that the company’s position in Israel is not monolithic since the firm’s relationship with the state is complex. Despite the fact that the company does not actively embrace any specific type of political agenda, the economic activities affiliated with this company cannot be considered without regard to the political climate experienced in the region of Israel. That Amazon supports Israel will always be a topical issue, so long as there remains the Israeli-Arab conflict and so long as Amazon remains a global force. What is, however, evident is that Amazon’s entry to the Israeli market is not simply an operational and business development agenda – but a political, socioeconomic, and moral activity that raises many questions regarding the relationship between the two states in the globalised world and their impact on third countries and global actors.
