Tienen (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Director Tim Stiers shared how Tienen’s school grew from 600 to 1,000 students, needing a new building.  Old classrooms and playgrounds are also being improved.

Director Tim Stiers emphasized the need for a new school building. The school’s enrollment jumped from 600 to 1,000 students in a short time. This increase forced the school to temporarily move some students to different locations.

Stiers is relieved that the school now has new facilities that fit the needs of the growing community. He mentioned that the new building is a big improvement over the old classrooms, which are 70 years old. It offers a modern and functional space for both students and staff.

“The new building is not coming too soon,”

Says director Tim Stiers.

“Our school has grown from 600 students to 1,000 students in a short time.”

How are innovative learning spaces transforming education in Tienen?

According to authorities, the new school spaces are very different from regular classrooms. They focus on teamwork and personal learning. The school has quiet areas called instruction boxes where students can get one-on-one help. They mentioned that this makes it easier for students who need extra support. There is also a practice desk for students in the Reception, Organization, and Sales grades. This desk helps them gain hands-on experience and improve their skills.

“Here we have switched to truly innovative spaces where collaboration is possible,”

Says Stiers.

“There are also separate instruction boxes, so that students who need extra explanation can easily get it.”

According to Stiers, the new learning spaces are made to help both students and teachers. Many students do better in spaces. These spaces also have an openness that encourages creativity and engagement. He mentioned that when students feel comfortable, they can focus better on their learning. The design makes sure that students have a supportive place to study.

“The teachers can now also choose which classrooms work best for them,”

Stier says.

Authorities highlight that they can choose classrooms that match their teaching style and goals. For example, teachers can select open areas where different classes can come together. They mentioned that the building has large windows that let in a lot of natural light.

The classrooms in the old building are being updated to create a better learning environment. According to management, this refresh involves changes to the walls, furniture, and learning tools. Along with the classrooms, the playgrounds are also being improved.

Next week, the work will start on the large playground. This area will be made greener, with more grass and plants added. Authorities mentioned that the updated playground will also offer more options for sports and games, allowing students to be more active and have fun during their breaks.
