Sint-Truiden (Brussels Morning Newspaper) Environmental groups led by Ronald Jacobs are challenging Tenneco’s PFOS claims in Melsterbeek. They urge stricter measures and public awareness.

The Limburg Environmental Dome, Climaxi, and Natuurpunt Oost-Brabant are concerned about Tenneco’s efforts to protect the environment. They are particularly worried about the Melsterbeek stream, which still shows pollution even though Tenneco claims it hasn’t used PFOS since 2012. Ronald Jacobs from Natuurpunt pointed out that there are still high pollution levels in the water and sediment.

Is Tenneco Polluting the Melsterbeek Stream in Sint-Truiden?

Recently, Tenneco received a permit to change some operations, but little clear information about PFOS emissions into the air has been available. Katrin Van den Troost from Climaxi believes changes are needed in the production process until more details are known, and the Flemish Environment Agency is asking for more research on this issue.

A new study by the Flemish Environment Agency has upset nature groups because it claims no companies are polluting the Melsterbeek stream with PFOS. Ronald Jacobs from Natuurpunt disagrees and says there is heavily polluted soil in the area. He is worried about comments from former Environment Minister Zuhal Demir, who said the situation isn’t serious. Jacobs points out that pollution levels are actually much higher near a nearby water treatment plant and questions why officials aren’t paying attention to this. He also notes that fish in the stream are in worse shape than those near a known pollution site, suggesting that the problem is being overlooked.

“Citizens are not correctly informed about the consequences for those who use that water”

Nature and environmental groups are pushing for a thorough investigation into Tenneco’s pollution of the Melsterbeek stream, as they believe the company has been discharging harmful PFOS-containing water for years. They are concerned that staff blood tests for potential chromium poisoning haven’t been conducted in a long time. To inform the public about the risks, they are hosting an information evening on January 30 in Sint-Truiden, featuring expert insights on the situation. The groups are also appealing against Tenneco’s current permit, seeking stricter measures to address ongoing pollution issues.

Environmental concerns in Sint-Truiden

Sint-Truiden is facing serious environmental issues that require immediate action. One of the biggest problems is flooding and soil erosion, which have gotten worse due to climate change and urban development. The area has been experiencing heavier rainfall, resulting in more frequent floods that threaten buildings and disrupt locals’ lives. Erosion along rivers and farmland is damaging the natural environment and local wildlife. In response, local authorities are investigating better water management and investing in green solutions to help protect against these challenges.

Sint-Truiden is taking steps to create a more sustainable community in response to environmental challenges. One key project is a €1.05 million nature initiative at Aster Hospital, which aims to create green spaces that connect people with nature and boost mental well-being. The town is also improving its waste management by adopting clean technology and working towards zero waste. These efforts highlight Sint-Truiden’s dedication to protecting the environment and enhancing the quality of life for its residents as they tackle ecological issues together.
