Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – EU top diplomat, Kaja Kallas urges Western nations to provide real security guarantees to Ukraine, not empty peace talks, stressing Russia’s unwillingness to negotiate.
European Union’s high representative on foreign affairs, Kaja Kallas has said that Western nations should stop proposing peace dialogues to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and instead ensure their guarantees of security guarantees to Kyiv are not “empty.”
EU’s chief diplomat said it was meaningless pressuring Zelenskyy to consider peace discussions when Russian President Vladimir Putin demonstrated no desire to stop the fight.
As reported by Financial Times, the former Estonian prime minister talked to the journalists ahead of a European Union leaders’ summit set to consult how Europe can adapt its backing to Ukraine after Donald Trump returns.
“There’s no point pushing Zelenskyy to talk when Putin doesn’t want to talk,”
Kallas described the Financial Times.
“We can’t talk about peacekeepers when there’s no peace. And why is there no peace? Because Russia does not want peace.”
“Supporting Ukraine now is much more affordable than enduring the fight later. Russia hasn’t changed their plans,” Kallas expressed. “I mean, we need to be very honest with ourselves in this regard. What are we really doing right now?”
Further Kallas said:
“The big inquiry is, what is the security guarantee? . . . What is it, that is tangible? If it is not soldiers, if it is not long-range weapons, what is it actually that covers you and protects you when somebody is striking you? All the European Union member states who have inked security guarantee contracts with Ukraine need to respond: what are they?”
she contended.
“I mean, in fact, really what are they willing to place on the table that represents these security guarantees would not be empty?”
Kallas stated that they should not underestimate their power or overestimate Russia’s power. She emphasized the need to do everything possible to strengthen Ukraine,
“as the stronger Ukraine is on the battlefield, the stronger it will be at the negotiation table, should they reach that point.”
