A 15-year-old girl died after being struck by a De Lijn bus at Genk station on October 24. She was crossing the road and had not noticed the bus. Mayor Wim Dries expressed sympathy for her family and announced that the City of Genk, De Lijn, and NMBS will work together to enhance safety in the area.
What changes are being made to improve safety at Genk station?
It has been said that station safety will improve with four new changes. The parking area will be redesigned to reduce traffic, and taxi spots will be moved. Sidewalks at the entrance will be made wider, while the road between the station and bus platforms will be narrower. Parking in front of the station will no longer be allowed, creating more space and better visibility for pedestrians.
Bus areas will be made easier to see for drivers and pedestrians to improve safety. Better signs and zebra crossings will also be added. These quick changes are expected to be finished before summer. A bigger plan to redesign the Stationsplein has been worked on for six years, and the aim is to start that project in five years after more discussions.
