Tienen (Brussels Morning Newspaper): In September 2023, a public inquiry in Tienen addressed concerns about a new hospital on Houtemstraat. After local opposition, the hospital withdrew its permit but later resubmitted plans. Director Gert Peters emphasized innovation in healthcare, and the Provincial Environmental Permit Committee approved construction, targeting a start by 2029.

In September last year, a public inquiry started in Tienen about a new hospital planned for Houtemstraat. This inquiry allowed residents to share their concerns and suggestions about the project. However, in November, the hospital withdrew its permit application. This decision came after many people raised worries about how easy it would be for patients and emergency services to access the hospital and how it would affect the quality of life in the nearby neighborhoods.

How will Tienen’s new hospital impact residents by 2029?

Residents were worried about how the new hospital in Tienen could affect their community. They raised concerns about possible increases in traffic, noise, and changes to the neighborhood’s character. Due to these issues and the feedback from the public inquiry, the hospital administration decided to reconsider its plans and address these challenges before moving forward with a new proposal.

In the spring, the hospital submitted a new application, and director Gert Peters argued that it addressed all the concerns raised earlier. The Provincial Environmental Permit Committee has now approved the construction of the new campus in Tienen. Gert Peters stated that the new campus is important for the future of healthcare in the region, emphasizing the need for innovation due to the current infrastructure and increasing demand for healthcare services.

Although the permit has been approved, construction won’t start immediately. Coordinator Ken Strikers mentioned that they will inform the neighborhood about the approval by putting up posters at the site. The start date for the work will depend on any appeals, but they are still aiming to begin by 2029.
