Brussels (The Brussels Morning Newspaper) – President of the EU Council Charles Michel affirmed the EU’s unwavering support for Ukraine, condemning Russia’s aggression and highlighting Ukrainian bravery and shared values.

In a video message for the fourth summit of the International Crimea Platform, President of the EU Council Charles Michel emphasized that Crimea is recognized as part of Ukraine, a stance consistently affirmed over the past decade. He noted that this year marks the tenth anniversary of Crimea’s illegal occupation. He highlighted that Russia’s conflict with Ukraine began not in February 2022, but with the 2014 assault on Crimea, which was followed by the full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Why does the EU Council President emphasize Ukraine’s role in Europe’s future?

Michel expressed the European Union’s commitment to a just peace grounded in the principles of the UN charter, supporting President Zelenskyy’s Peace Formula and the rules-based international order. He reaffirmed the EU’s support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as that of other nations, and pledged continued assistance in garnering support for Ukraine’s peace plan based on these core principles.

How is the EU contributing to Ukraine’s military, financial, and political efforts?

In his message, Charles Michel conveyed that the European Union considers Ukraine to be an integral part of its community, underscoring the EU’s commitment to providing ongoing military, financial, and political support. He assured that efforts would continue to mobilize the international community against Russia, emphasizing the global threat posed by the Kremlin’s actions.

Michel highlighted the courage and resilience of Ukrainian people—men and women fighting to defend their families, cities, and loved ones amidst great hardship. He expressed the duty of Europeans to stand alongside Ukraine in this pivotal moment, acknowledging the shared aspirations, values, and future at stake. He conveyed deep gratitude for the bravery and sacrifice of the Ukrainian people, concluding with a heartfelt thank you and a salute to Ukraine.
