Mechelen (The Brussels Morning Newspaper): A 3-year-old child was critically injured after being hit by a car in Mechelen. Emergency services responded but the child remains in critical condition. Authorities are investigating the incident.
On 14th August at 13:50 on Petrus Turksinstraat in Mechelen an accident happened involving a 3-year-old child from Sint-Stevens-Woluwe. The child was hit by a car driven by a 19-year-old from Mechelen. The driver said they saw the child too late and couldn’t stop in time which caused the crash. Emergency services quickly got to the scene and tried to revive the child. The child was then taken to the hospital in critical condition. Authorities are looking into what happened to figure out why the accident occurred and if any further actions are needed.

Acting Mayor Steve Clays (N-VA) shared a event where a 3-year-old child suddenly ran into the street between two parked cars and got hit by a passing car. The way the child crossed the street probably made the accident worse. Emergency services including an ambulance and a Medical Urgent Group (MUG), quickly arrived to give immediate medical help. The child received treatment at the scene and was taken to the hospital for more care.
According to police spokeswoman Catherine Bodet from the VIMA zone (Vilvoorde-Mechelen) the child who was in the accident was revived at the scene and then taken to UZ Brussels in critical condition. Even with quick and strong medical care the child was in a life-threatening state when arriving at the hospital. The Halle-Vilvoorde public prosecutor’s office has assigned a traffic expert to look into the accident carefully. This expert will check the scene and look at all important factors to find out exactly what caused the accident. Their findings will help explain how the incident happened and understand any possible factors that might have played a role.
The driver of the car involved in the accident was taken by the police for questioning. Early investigations suggest that it was an accident and not something done on purpose. To make sure the driver’s condition didn’t play a part in the incident tests for alcohol and drugs were done and both came back negative. This means the driver was not under the influence at the time of the accident. The investigation will keep going to better understand what happened in this event.
