Brussels (The Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The EU fully supports Ukraine’s right to self-defence against Russia, including actions on Russian territory. It has provided nearly €108 billion in aid and imposed 14 sanctions packages.

What Is the EU’s Stance on Ukraine’s Self-Defence Rights?

The European Union states that it fully backs Ukraine in its efforts in legitimate self-defence against the Russian aggressor. Peter Stano, press secretary of the EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, remarked on the latest reports on the combat of the Ukrainian side on the territory of the Kursk region of the Russian Federation, responding to a question from journalists.

Why Does the EU Back Ukraine’s Strikes on Russian Territory?

“Based on international law, Ukraine has a right to defend itself, and this right to defend itself includes also striking the enemy on his territory,” he said, stating that the EU does not comment on developments on the battleground, as it does not participate in them.

Stano commented that the EU “is fully standing behind Ukraine’s actions to restore its territorial integrity and sovereignty and to go back and fight the illegal aggression by Russia.” “Our position is outlined in several Council conclusions, conclusions of the European Council, and this position has not altered since February 2022. It’s full backing for Ukraine in its legitimate self-defence against the aggression, and our backing includes political, financial, humanitarian, diplomatic, and military assistance, nothing is switching on this, as has been confirmed most recently during the June European Council,” the representative of the EU Foreign Diplomatic Service contended.

In addition, Stano stated that the EU has been in constant communication with the Ukrainian side, not only since the start of a full-scale invasion by Russia but also earlier. Earlier, the media reported on the fighting that started in the border area of the Kursk region. Ukraine has not officially commented on this information.

What Support Has the EU Provided to Ukraine Since the Invasion?

Brussels and the EU’s 27 member states have so far delivered support of almost €108 billion to the war-torn nation. It has meanwhile smashed Russia with 14 packages of sanctions over its full-scale attack in a bid to cut its revenue and access to the materials and technologies it requires to wage war.
