Tielt (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Traffic disturbances are going to occur in Tielt starting from Friday, August 21 when the company Jacops commences the utility work in Krommewalstraat under the contract of Wyre. These works are planned to go on until Monday, August 31. This project is going to take place in several stages and will impact the mobility of motorists, cyclists, pedestrians, inhabitants and companies in and around Krommewalstraat and Peperstraat. The city of Tielt gave an early announcement about this traffic measure.
Which roads will be closed?
During the first phase, from Friday, August 21, to Friday, August 28, the following road sections will be closed:
- Krommewalstraat between Keidamstraat and Peperstraat.
- Peperstraat.
These parts will be closed to traffic when the works are being carried out by the contractor. The available notice issued by the municipality does not indicate whether pedestrians and bicycles will have access to the area or if there will be access for the residents. It has also been observed that the municipal corporation has not given any information about the construction technique, number of properties or the underground system components involved.
What diversion route should motorists use?
Motorists will be directed along the following diversion route:
Kistestraat → Manestraat → Keidamstraat → Krommewalstraat → Ringlaan (N37) → Bruggestraat.
Road users are advised to follow the temporary signs rather than rely solely on navigation applications, as traffic arrangements may change during the works. The publicly available announcement confirms that the works will continue through August 31, but it provides fewer details about the traffic arrangements for the final phase from Saturday, August 29, to Monday, August 31. Further instructions may be communicated through temporary signage or a subsequent update from the city.
Why are the works being carried out?
The works have been commissioned by Wyre, a Belgian company dealing with telecommunications infrastructure that is engaged in the development and construction of fixed network infrastructure, such as fiber and hybrid fiber-coaxial networks. The company claims that it is trying to create a faster and more future-proof network and calls its infrastructure an open network that could be employed by various telecom operators. Other activities of the company include the upgrading, fiber installation, repair, and connection works for houses and enterprises.
The notification of the municipality mentions the project “nutswerken” or utility works; however, the exact installation has not been specified yet. The works might be related to the works on telecommunication cables or networks, but this has not been officially specified yet.
Jacops, the contractor appointed for the project, works on telecommunications, fibre, 5G, railway and other infrastructure networks. Its involvement is consistent with Wyre’s network-construction and maintenance activities.
What has Wyre said about its network programme?
Wyre has described its broader infrastructure mission as “building the network of the future” and says it wants to improve connectivity while limiting the impact of construction on residents and communities.
The company’s stated approach is to modernise existing infrastructure, expand fibre coverage and make the network available to multiple providers. However, neither Wyre nor the City of Tielt has publicly confirmed that the Krommewalstraat project forms part of a particular large-scale fibre rollout.
In July 2026, the Belgian Competition Authority approved a cooperation agreement involving Wyre, Telenet, Proximus and Fiberklaar to accelerate fibre deployment in Flanders. The parties announced plans involving more than two million fibre-connectable homes and businesses. That regional development provides context for the works, but it should not be treated as proof that the Tielt project is directly covered by the agreement.
Has Tielt experienced similar works before?
The Krommewalstraat project came after many other projects concerning utilities and networks in Tielt and nearby streets. During March 2-6, 2026, the contractor Jacops executed utility works in Regentiestraat as a representative of the network-infrastructure company Wyre. This case is an example of the same contractor doing the job for the same company in Tielt again. Earlier, from December 5-19, 2025, Jacops installed low-voltage cables in Ontvangerstraat for Wyre.
These works were made between Kortrijkstraat and the car park that could be reached via Sint-Michielstraat. In this case, that section was closed for traffic and even pedestrians and cyclists, although access to the car park and the section going to Ieperstraat was still available. Moreover, the utility works in Oude Gentstraat and Karel van Manderstraat in Tielt happened between November 27, 2025, and January 17, 2026. Several contractors and utility companies did these works, among which there were Wyre, Fluvius and De Watergroep.
