Waregem (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Waregem Hospital Staff Shave Mustaches today, Dec 1, 2025, for Movember to raise awareness of Prostate Cancer, Led by Prostate Nurse Bart Vindevoghel, promoting early screening and men’s health conversations

As VRT News reported, a barber visited Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Waregem, in the province of West Flanders, Belgium, today, Dec 1, 2025, to shave the mustaches of the male staff. The event is part of the international “Movember” campaign.

How is Waregem Hospital using Movember to raise Prostate cancer awareness?

Male staff at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Waregem are joining the Movember campaign to raise awareness of prostate cancer.

“We wanted to spark a conversation among men in a lighthearted way,” says prostate nurse Bart Vindevoghel. “And it worked: many of the staff who participated were approached about their mustaches last month. Men who are usually clean-shaven, in particular, received a lot of responses.”

Officials mentioned that the question,

“Why are you growing a mustache?”

helps encourage men to get checked and seek early screening. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and one of the deadliest. Early detection improves chances of successful treatment. Doctors recommend men start prostate exams at age 50. Men with a family history or other risk factors should start earlier.

The Movember campaign started in Australia in 2003 and has grown into a global effort to raise awareness of men’s health. Each November, men grow mustaches to encourage discussions about prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention. Hospitals, workplaces, and communities organise events like mustache shaves, fundraisers, and information sessions to reach the public.
