Defining the nature of that polarization is more difficult and important than simply noting that it is strong. It is also essential to avoid the false equivalencies that suggest that left-wing politicians like AOC or Bernie Sanders are the equivalent of deluded fascists like Marjorie Taylor Greene or Donald Trump. Similarly, understanding this polarization through a prism of left and right is unhelpful because the MAGA dominated GOP is not exactly conservative in any broadly accepted understanding of the concept. A framework of fascism against democracy gets closer to the point, but too frequently those words are seen as platitudes and insults with meanings that are less clear.

For the last few years the Republican Party has sought to reposition itself away from a party organized around conservative economic policy and into an angry populist voice for the white working class. This budget agreement demonstrates that the GOP still has a long way to go in this area. Cuts to the IRS will not affect working people whose taxes are withheld in their paychecks, but will make it easier for the very wealthy to avoid paying their share of taxes. Work requirements, particularly without a corresponding bump in the minimum wage, only accelerate the cruel nature of the current American social contract in which people must work way too much for jobs that pay way too little or risk starving and becoming homeless. Freezing spending means that there can be no new or expanded programs to help working people in times of economic uncertainty or crisis.

The Freedom Caucus was formed after the Republican Party won a majority in the House in the 2014 midterms. Members of this august group include Louis Gohmert of Texas, Jim Jordan of Ohio, Lauren Boebert of Colorado, and Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia.
White was a former policeman and fireman who had been elected to the Board of Supervisors in 1977, but resigned his position in early November of 1978 citing financial pressure. In those respects White differed from DePape who is probably best understood as a drifter whose politics also drifted from the weirder corners of the far left to the more violent and conspiracy obsessed quadrants of the far right. However, despite their differences, White and DePape were both motivated by a sense of white grievance and believed they were losing their city or culture to people who were not like them. DePape was Canadian, so his white grievance should be understood in a larger international context, but the sentiment driving White’s fear and hostility towards a changing San Francisco would not stand out at a MAGA rally today.

Throughout his campaign and the first part of his presidency, Biden refused to call for the end of the filibuster. The filibuster can only be abolished by the senate, not the president, but if the president called for it, he might have been able to put pressure on Democrats in the senate to support the idea. On the other hand, by defending the filibuster he made it very easy for Democratic senators to hide behind him and support the filibuster as well. This was done in the name of bipartisanship, senate tradition and working across the aisle. These fantasies from another era are apparently more important to Biden and many senators than saving the lives of young Americans, like those murdered in Uvalde.

There is precedent for the US to be segmented in this way-and overcoming that segmentation was essential for the consolidation of American democracy. Until the passage of important national civil rights legislation in the mid-1960s, the US was, with regards to racial equality, to a great extent two different countries. In the north, racism was always present and permeated governance, but in much of the south legal segregation that amounted to apartheid-like conditions prevailed as African Americans could not vote, were forced to attend poorly funded segregated schools, and were excluded from many public spaces. African Americans in the north had basic democratic rights, while those in the south did not.
