Eight members of the Huddersfield grooming gang have been told they can appeal their convictions or sentences.

The gang of 20 members who abused at least 15 vulnerable girls between 2004 and 2011 were jailed for more than 220 years last October.

A month later, 17 members of the gang lodged appeals, including the ringleader who was given a life sentence and one man who is thought to be on the run, while an eighteenth member, Manzoor Hassan, also recently lodged an appeal.

Amere Singh Dhaliwal, Irfan Ahmed, Zahid Hassan, Mohammed Kammer, Mohammed Rizwan Aslam,
Abdul Rehman, Raj Singh Barsran and Nahman Mohammed have all been told they can appeal their convictions.

Now, a judge at the Court of Appeal has referred most of the applications made on behalf of the defendants in the first trial to the full court.

This means three judges will decide whether to grant or refuse them leave to appeal.

The same judge refused all applications made on behalf of the defendants in the second trial, except for Hassan whose application is still being processed.
