Meghan Markle cradled her baby bump as she announced her wedding dress designer as the winner of the 2018 British Fashion awards.
The Duchess of Sussex wore a daring one-shouldered Givenchy gown as she honoured Clare Waight Keller with the British Womenswear Designer of the Year award.
Speaking to the crowd, she thanked the assembled audience for her warm welcome at the celebration of British fashion in her new home of the UK.
Speaking at the ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall she said: Its so nice to see so many familiar faces, many of you Ive known for quite a while, and a lot of you Ive been able to meet over the last year. Thank you for the warm welcome.
As all of you in this room know we have a deep connection to what we wear. Sometimes its very personal, sometimes its emotional. But for me, this connection is rooted in really being able to understand that its about supporting and empowering each other, especially as women.
When you choose to wear a certain designer, were not a reflection of their creativity and their vision, were also an extension of their values. Of something in the fabric that is much more meaningful.
I recently read an article that said the culture of fashion has shifted from one where its cool to be cruel, to now where its cool to be kind. To that point I feel especially proud to announce tonights winner, who is a British designer leading on the world stage, with vision and creativity, but also with incredible kindness.
Which is why I knew, when I met her 11 months ago, that wed be working very closely together. The winner this evening is Claire Waight Keller.
Waight Keller was the designer behind Meghans gown for her wedding to Prince Harry in May.
The dress had a classic boat neckline and a 6ft train with no embroidery, while her veil was adorned with flowers from all 53 of the Commonwealth countries, as well as a Califonian poppy to represent American-born Meghans home state.
Kensington Palace said that the delicate embroidering took workers hundreds of hours to complete, and they would wash their hands every half hour to keep the while tulle clean.
Waight Keller said: This woman is so amazing. I got to know Meghan on such a personal level. To have someone like that trust you on such a personal moment in their life… I cant thank you enough because it was the most beautiful moment.
When Meghan met the first female artistic director of French fashion house earlier this year, she requested a dress with an elegant aesthetic, impeccable tailoring, and relaxed demeanor.
