A horse show has been cancelled and humans and horses evacuated after a major fire at a nearby car park.

A fire involving ‘a number of vehicles’ has broken out at a multi-storey car park near Liverpool‘s Echo Arena, where the Horse of the Year show was being held.

Show-goers posted online that the show was swiftly cancelled, and visitors and animals were evacuated.

There are currently 12 fire engines on the scene battling the blaze, which witnesses claim has spread across the ‘whole top level’ of the car park.

Others fear there are horse boxes – with horses inside – trapped in the multi-storey.

One witness, James Forshaw, told Metro.co.uk that that the ‘whole top level of the arena car park’ was believed to be ablaze, and that they were being evacuated from the arena

‘It’s strange because most people are still in the stadium but people are mostly calm,’ he said.

‘There are a lot of people getting frustrated because they don’t know what’s happened to their cars. Arena staff are telling them they don’t know yet.’

Another witness, Alison Richardson, told the Liverpool Echo that ‘some people have been saying that there are horse boxes in the car park, with animals in’.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue said in a statement: ‘Firefighters are attending a fire at a multi-storey car park at Kings Dock, in Liverpool.

‘Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service was called at 4.42pm and crews were on the scene at 4.50pm.

‘Six fire engines are in attendance and crews, wearing breathing apparatus, are tackling the fire using a 52 mil hose.

‘The fire is believed to involve a number of vehicles. Updates to follow.’

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police told Metro.co.uk: ‘Merseyside Police can confirm that they are dealing with an incident at the car park of the Liverpool Echo Arena and a number of vehicles are on fire.

‘Emergency services were called to the scene tonight (Sunday, 31 December, 2017) at around 5pm and nearby apartments have been evacuated due to smoke.

‘A number of horses have safely been taken from the scene following The Horse Of The Year Show which is currently showcasing at the Arena.

‘The public are advised to stay away from the area and traffic restrictions are currently in place.

‘Await further updates which will be posted on social media and local media.’

Liverpool Echo arena said in a statement: ‘We regret to announce that the Liverpool International Horse Show has been cancelled tonight due to a serious fire in the multi storey car park on site.

‘All people and horses are safe and secure. We are working alongside the emergency services to ensure the fire is brought under control and to make the site safe as quickly as possible.

‘Please note that there is no access to the ACC Liverpool site. We will provide regular updates when we can.’
