‘This is my buddy’: Boxing great Mayweather meets Chechen leader Kadyrov, wants Russian citizenship

Five-weight world boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. wants to apply for Russian citizenship, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov has said after meeting the legendary US fighter in Grozny.

“We had a warm conversation about boxing and the prospects of its development in Chechnya, Russia and all over the world. His experience, namely fifty victories in fifty fights are worth a lot,” Kadyrov wrote on his Telegram channel.

“But most importantly, Mayweather spoke of his desire to obtain Russian citizenship,” the Chechen leader wrote. The boxer, one of the best in history, is planning to promote peace and cooperation between the American and Russian people, he said.

Mayweather expressed hope that his citizenship bid will be accepted and said he already has a place to live in Moscow. He also wants to own a home in Grozny, Kadyrov said.

Kadyrov’s post included a video of Mayweather, nicknamed ‘Money,’ hugging the Chechen leader and urging his fans to follow the Kadyrov on social media.

“This is my buddy. This is my guy over here. Yes, he’s a part of the ‘Money Team’. I’m in Chechnya right now. I’m worldwide with this,” the boxer says of Kadyrov in the footage.

“We have a lot of plans together,” Kadyrov wrote further, adding, that the American is going to bring a team of famous boxers to Chechnya early in 2018. The Chechen leader and Mayweather also staged a sparring match, he said.

The 40-year-old boxer was seen in Moscow Thursday where he inspected the ‘The Money Team’ gym and motivating young talent.

Mayweather last appeared in the boxing ring in August, beating UFC superstar Conor McGregor by a technical knockout in one of the most hyped bouts in history. The hybrid fight reportedly brought the boxer an estimated $230 million.

Several famous American athletes have recently applied and have been granted Russian citizenship, including another boxing legend, Roy Jones Jr., and UFC fighter, Jeff Monson.
